Overview of 2016 Hero Women’s Indian Open

Rookie professional Aditi Ashok wrote her name into the history books as she was crowned as the first home winner of the Hero Women’s Indian Open on the challenging Gary Player course at DLF Golf and Country Club. The 18-year-old from Bangalore became the first Indian player to win on the Ladies European Tour after ending one stroke clear of Brittany Lincicome and Belen Mozo. It was a fairy tale finish for the teenager who was inspired to become a professional golfer when she watched Laura Davies and Gwladys Nocera compete at the 2007 EMAAR-MGF Ladies Masters in her home city, Bangalore and who had first played in the Indian Open as a 13-year-old amateur.

About the Hero Women’s Indian Open

The Hero Women’s Indian Open is the ultimate proof of the rapid strides made by women’s professional golf in India. It attracts the very best of talent from across the globe with the majority of players coming from Europe and Asia. The Hero Women’s Indian Open was originally co-sanctioned between the Women’s Golf Association of India and the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) in 2007 and became sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET) in 2010, adding further prestige to the event and offering the opportunity for talented young Indian women golfers to test their skills against some of the world’s top players. The honour roll includes Yani Tseng (2007), Pornanong Phatlum (2008, 2009 and 2012), Laura Davies (2010), Caroline Hedwall (2011), Thidapa Suwannapura (2013), Gwladys Nocera (2014), Emily Kristine Pedersen (2015) and Aditi Ashok (2016).
