Suzann Pettersen won the inaugural Evian Championship in 2013

The final major of the 2014 Ladies European Tour season takes place this week with the Evian Championship at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France, on September 11-14.

Hosted in one of Europe’s most stunning locations above the shores of Lac Leman in the beautiful Haute Savoie at the source of evian water, the tournament has become one of the most international sporting events in France. With a prize fund of 3.25 million USD, or 2,407,470 euros, the purse is the second highest in women’s golf, second only to the US Women’s Open and the winner will earn $487,500 (approximately 378,259 euros). This year 50,000 fans are expected to line the fairways while viewers from 170 countries will watch the live broadcast of the championship around the world.

The Evian Masters was founded in 1994 and this year the venue is celebrating 20 years of women’s professional golf. Last year, in 2013, a new milestone was reached when the Evian Masters was promoted to become one of the world’s five women’s majors, with a re-designed world championship level golf course and several new greens. This is the second year of the championship – the only major in continental Europe – and the course has now matured, with the firm undulating greens providing a greater challenge.

The field of 120 of the world’s greatest women golfers is now complete, including 116 professionals and four amateurs.

Last year’s champion Suzann Pettersen from Norway has returned to defend the title and in total there are 44 Ladies European Tour members teeing up in the championship.

This includes 11 Ladies European Tour winners and six LET members making their debut at Evian: Nikki Campbell, Valentine Derrey, Julie Greciet, Camilla Lennarth, Ariane Provot and Kylie Walker.

Provot and Chinese amateur Jing Yan were the two qualifiers, while the four invited players were Frenchwomen Caroline Afonso, Joanna Klatten, amateur Celine Boutier and Australian Minjee Lee, who is making her professional debut at Evian.
